Les activités de recherche menées au sein de l’opération se concentrent autour de l’identification des propriétés thermophysiques de matériaux, de conditions aux limites (flux) et de termes sources de chaleur. Ces problèmes d’inversion de mesures font appel au développement de méthodes spécifiques à chaque problème pour s’adapter aussi bien à la nature des matériaux étudiés (hétérogènes, multicouches), à la métrologie thermique utilisée pour une application donnée (avec ou sans contact, ponctuelle ou imagerie) et au nombre de grandeurs à identifier (propriété effective ou champ de propriétés).
Ces activités trouvent leurs applications dans des domaines variés, le domaine à plus forte croissance durant la période étant celui des machines de fusion thermonucléaire (Tokamaks) au cœur desquelles est confiné un plasma d’environ 100 millions de degrés. Certains composants clés du Tokamak sont dimensionnés pour recevoir les flux thermiques les plus intenses (10 MW/m²) et obligent donc à la métrologie thermique la plus complète possible du composant dans cette situation extrême. Il faut ainsi, pour comprendre l’interaction plasma-paroi et garantir la sécurité des composants de cette paroi, premièrement accéder avec la meilleure précision possible à la température à la surface et/ou à l’intérieur de ces composants pendant un choc plasma. Il faut ensuite connaître, in-situ ou ex-situ, les propriétés thermophysiques des matériaux de ces composants, durant leur vie dans la machine. Il faut enfin, utiliser toutes ces données pour résoudre le problème inverse d’identification du flux déposé en surface pendant un choc plasma. Ces activités sont développées dans la Fédération de Recherche FR-FCM et dans le projet A*Midex WILD WEST.
Les mesures thermiques et les différentes méthodes d’inversion développées dans cette opération de recherche trouvent également des applications dans des domaines variés comme : la physique de l’évaporation, la thermomécanique de composites (Labex MEC de l’AMU), la caractérisation de matériaux poreux (ANR FOAM) ou frittés, la thermographie en microélectronique (A*Midex ALPES), la thermographie quantitative de bâtiments, les procédés membranaires (pervaporation). Les activités de l’opération s’organisent ainsi autour de trois thèmes.
