Le thème central de notre activité est la connaissance des mécanismes de couplage Structure / Ecoulements-Transferts / Réactions (bio/électro) chimiques. L’intérêt des objets poreux dans ce contexte réside dans le nombre et la surface totale d’interfaces présents au sein du milieu, ce qui permet d’obtenir un effet d’amplification conduisant à l’observation d’effets macroscopiques et d’intensité assez élevée. Nous avons ainsi une classe de matériaux d’études présentant une forte variabilité et dont les propriétés structurales, mécaniques et thermochimiques peuvent être choisies dans une large mesure. Le fil conducteur de ces travaux est l’analyse des mécanismes de base contrôlant les phénomènes couplés afin de les maîtriser, et ainsi améliorer les performances thermiques des systèmes et des procédés. Cette démarche permet d’améliorer les performances de transferts des systèmes et des procédés. Les lois de variations paramétriques sont ainsi dégagées sur la base de la simulation directe des phénomènes de transport associée au changement d’échelle, complétant nos expériences de référence. Nous développons des modèles liés à des topologies simplifiées (ex réseaux de brins) mais également basés sur la topologie réelle de tels matériaux. Cette démarche s’appuie sur le développement d’outils numériques (Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM), morphologie….) aptes à modéliser des physiques diverses ainsi que des volumes importants de données. Le couplage de ces différentes approches nous permet de dégager des critères géométriques caractéristiques des transferts et leurs conséquences sur les propriétés des matériaux. De manière globale, nos efforts se focalisent sur 3 aspects:

  • I’impact de la structure des milieux poreux et tout particulièrement des matériaux cellulaires (mousses métalliques, céramiques) sur leurs propriétés effectives thermophysiques et d’écoulement. La prédiction des propriétés thermophysiques et d’écoulements à partir de la morphologie de milieux réels (imagerie 3D) ou virtuels (issues de CAO).
  • la compréhension des mécanismes de transferts et du changement de phase dans des milieux poreux déformables ou dans des échangeurs à parois déformables. Nous étudions l’impact des paramètres dynamiques de déformation sur les mécanismes, de l’échelle de la ligne triple à celle du composant en vue de l’activation de l’ébullition, de la maîtrise des phénomènes de changement de phase et de l’intensification des transferts.
  • l’analyse de l’impact du couplage de réactions chimiques avec les transferts thermiques et les écoulements. La prise en compte et l’intégration de l’aspect multi-échelle : millimétrique (écoulements, transferts), micrométrique (thermique, échanges), nanométrique (catalyse) constitue un axe privilégié de développement. Nous nous intéressons à l’optimisation de systèmes électrochimiques ainsi qu’au développement de matériaux à structure hiérarchisée.

Ces activités trouvent des applications dans de nombreux domaines visant les procédés tels que : la filtration membranaire, les mélangeurs, les celulles electrochimiques, bio-electrodes, les échangeurs compacts, les récepteurs solaires mais également la comprehension de la structure des milieux poreux tel que : les fibres de bois, les bétons/Ciment, les lits de billes (barrieres des rayons gamma) et cables électriques en conduits (CICC) pour ITER, les os, les mousses solides, ,..
