Single vapour bubble nucleation from a heater

Contact: Damien Serret, David Brutin

The aim of this heater is to control accuratelythe heat flux generated and transmitted to the upward and downward faces and the lateral side of the heater element. This challenging operation will allow to have a better control of the heat flux which i one of the most important parameter of the nucleation and bubble growth analysis. On this basis, additionnal measurements will be implemented to discretize the contribution of the heat flux to the several phenomena involved in the boiling prcess for the situation of a single nucelation site.

The heater is designed to deliver a uniform heat flux to the upper face and to minimise the heat losses on lateral and downward faces. Heating wall thickness included between 100 and 200µm. The background heat source could be made by a piece of metal including an electric resistance. The second possibility is to engrave an electric resistance in the fluxmeter.

Using an IR camera, we test the thermal uniformity of the copper surface by adding a coat of black paint. This test was realized for different power heating.

This test show the role of the resin which includes the heating element. And despite the black coating, we observe clearly the heating zone and the resin on which the temperature is sharply decreasing (60°C for 1 cm on the vertical profile for the higher heating test).
